Frank Dignum

I am Professor at the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University, Sweden where I lead the research group Social Aware Artificial Intelligence.

I am a Fellow of the European Artificial Intelligence Association (EURAI) and I am also associated with the Department of Information and Computing Sciences at Utrecht University and the department of Computing Science at the Czech University of Technology in Prague. See here what I do in Utrecht and here what I do in Prague. I am also an honorary principal research fellow at the university of Melbourne.

I am co-founder and editor in chief of the International Journal of Socio-Cognitive Systems

Research interests

I argue that social intelligence is NOT a module that can be added to any other intelligent system in order to make it social. Rather social intelligence is something that is a fundamental aspect of all our intelligence. It pervades all our deliberations and decision making. E.g. if I make a decision which house to buy I will already be thinking unconsciously how I will explain my decision to my friends. Those arguments might not be the actual reasons I bought the house but should create a believable story based on the facts.

In order to develop socio-cognitive systems with social AI I develop the following research lines:

1. Extend the fundamental theories on social aspects of reality in order to have a good foundation for the incorporation of these social aspects in AI systems.

2. Extend the work on agent based social simulations basing it on a more fundamental social agent model to create better simulations that give more useful insights for policy makers.

3. Extend the work on social agent architectures and technique connecting to and extending existing machine learning techniques as well.
